CCTV 8K Ultra HD channel trial live experience: stunning picture quality

Date: 2021/23/02

The 8K ultra-high-definition channel broadcast trial was officially launched by China Central Radio and Television. This trial will continue from February 1st to February 28th. It is reported that during the test period, 8K ultra-high-definition TV channels broadcast experimental signals will cover public places in nine cities in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Jinan, Haikou and Qingdao. Broadcast on thirty large screens or public televisions. After receiving this news, the author also contacted relevant staff as soon as possible, and participated in the commissioning of China's first 8K ultra-high-definition channel broadcast experiment throughout the whole process, witnessing historical moments. Because the current equipment is in the experimental stage, some specific details are not convenient to disclose, but there is still a lot of information worth sharing with everyone. In order to allow viewers to see the perfect test results, BOE, as a CCTV 8K Ultra HD technology partner, has provided 110-inch 8K Ultra HD display products in Beijing. They are distributed in the Central Radio and Television Station (Guanghua Road, Fuxingmen Office Area), Beijing City Sub-center, and the National Grand Theater where the author went to shoot (some areas above are temporarily closed to the public).

The 110-inch 8K TV of the National Centre for the Performing Arts is located on the left side of the theater. It is also the equipment that needs to be adjusted first. After all, the prerequisite for the trial broadcast must ensure that the 8k video can be played normally. The staff of BOE said that this TV is the latest BOE product and is not yet commercially available. It has excellent performance and picture performance, and the surface is designed with anti-glare. Due to the location, the product is in a light environment at this time, but it can be seen through the picture, and the picture is still clearly visible. Next is network debugging. As we all know, the clearer the video picture, the larger the video file, and the higher the bandwidth requirements. Take 8K ultra-high-definition channels as an example. In order to meet normal playback requirements, it needs to occupy about three times the bandwidth of ordinary channels, and at the same time, it needs the support of HDMI 2.1 interface.

In this trial broadcast site, the National Grand Theater uses Unicom's gigabit network to ensure that the signal can be output stably for a long time. Finally, it is the debugging of the 8K UHD decoder, which is simply a new set-top box for watching 8K UHD videos in the future.

According to the CCTV staff, the screens used in this trial broadcast are independently developed by my country and have independent intellectual property rights AVS3 coding standard. This 8K ultra-high-definition decoder is specially designed for this purpose and is also equipped with a gigabit network port. There is no mass production, and the quantity does not exceed double digits.

With the perfect coordination of the three programs of transmission, decoding and output, the BOE’s 110-inch 8K TV at the National Centre for the Performing Arts finally successfully broadcast the CCTV 8K Ultra HD channel. The author is also honored to witness this historical moment.

The trial screens are mostly documentaries, close to the screen, you can see the clear picture details brought by the 8K resolution. Among them, Hisense, as the exclusive partner of the 8K Spring Festival Gala live broadcast in 2021, will occasionally broadcast advertisements on the 8K Ultra HD channel.

In fact, Japan and South Korea have always been the world leader in the research and development of video technology. In the era when 4K is gradually popular, it is even more popular. However, this 8K ultra-high-definition video broadcast trial is of milestone significance for my country's video field. First, China’s independent research and development, with independent intellectual property rights, the AVS3 coding standard may replace the HEVC/H.265 standard used in foreign countries as the mainstream in the future; secondly, this also makes my country the second country in the world with 8K channels. The world has a leading and exemplary role; the third is that BOE already has a company that can produce high-quality 8K panels in China, and has sufficient production capacity; finally, it promotes the creative power of creators for 8K video resources and forms an ecological closed loop.

With the increasingly complete 8K system, it is believed that China will be able to overtake corners and become the world's leader in 8K video technology!
